We’re on a mission to discover the best music distribution platform available to musicians. Today we’re going to discuss Amuse – Giving you all the details you need to know when selecting the right distribution service for your music.
What Is Amuse?
Amuse was original built to scout new talent by analysing the statistics of artists distributing music through their platform. It was also originally a mobile app only – Meaning users could distribute music through their phone. This was never going to work long-term and Amuse realised that. They have since launched Amuse Free, and Amuse Pro, which you can use their platform from your desktop and/or laptop. UPDATE – Amuse Free is no longer an option.
Amuse is relatively new in comparison to many other distribution companies we cover, but it’s already rather powerful in terms of features, alongside the competitive pricing structure. On top of this, they’re continually updating the service, adding new features, alongside stores, and making existing features better.
When we initially reviewed Amuse, it was 100% free to join, with an option to pay for extended features. Now they’ve moved to a more sustainable structure, with no free option, but two paid options; BOOST & PRO.
Alongside that, they offer services, such as promotion – If you’re selected by their A&R team. This adds depth to their service and allows them to stand out amongst all of the options we cover throughout our distribution guide.
Although we would never recommend you make your decision solely on promotion alone, it’s a great incentive considering their paid plans are a great alternative to the likes of LANDR, Distrokid, and of course, Ditto!
Do You Have To Pay To Use Amuse?
No – Amuse is 100% free to use, however their features are limited. If you’re only interested in getting your music into stores with support that lacks, no scheduled distribution or being able to use royalty splits (without them taking commission from your royalties), then this is the perfect option for you. UPDATE – Amuse no longer has a free option.
They now offer two options; BOOST, and PRO! We’ll cover each below:
BOOST ($19.99 Per Year):
- Keep 100% of your royalties
- Automatic royalty splits.
- Get your music into stores within 5-14 days.
- Customer Support within 72 hours.
- One artist profile.
PRO ($59.99 Per Year):
- Keep 100% of your royalties
- Automatic royalty splits.
- Get your music into stores within 2-10 days.
- Customer Support within 24 hours.
- Add team members.
- Multiple artist profiles (Great option for Record Labels).
As you can see, the PRO subscription will be fine for many independent musicians but the only real downside is the lack of support, alongside release times of 5-14 days.
Both BOOST and PRO allow artists to distribute unlimited songs.
Both plans now offer YouTube Content ID too, which is awesome! On top of this, you also keep 100% of royalties from this – Something many other distribution company’s don’t offer; They can take anywhere from 5-30%.
What We Love About Amuse:
- Their split-pay functionality is one of the best around. Super simple to set up while creating your release.
- Keep 100% of YouTube Content ID.
- Decent analytics and a great, easy to use interface.
- They’re continually updating their services.
- You can track your analytics using their mobile app. A nice touch if you’re a touring artist, and you’re constantly on the move!
- Chance of promotion, dependant on their team reaching out to you.
- There’s an option for both artists and labels!
- Extremely competitive pricing when comparing with similar services.
- Allows you to release cover songs.
- Access automated advances.
What We Don’t Like About Amuse:
Stores are limited. They only cover major distribution stores. Here’s the list:
- Spotify
- Apple Music
- Facebook, Instagram & TikTok
- TIDAL
- Amazon Music
- Deezer
- Napster
- Google Music
- Shazam
- Anghami
UPDATE! Stores added since our last review:
- SoundCloud
- Snapchat
- SoundTrack Your Brand
- YouTube Music
- Audiomack
- iHeart Radio
- Tencent
- KKBox
- Boomplay
- Pandora
- Resso
- Netease
- Nuuday
- Claro Música
- JioSaavn
As you can see from the above, they are constantly adding new stores, another fantastic thing to see over the years.
Does Amuse Promote Your Music?
They do, but you have to be handpicked by their A&R team. As we state throughout our distribution guide – You should never base your decision on whether a distribution company promotes your music or not.
Good quality distribution and customer care should always be your priority, while promotion should always be an added bonus.
Because Amuse is a relatively new company, there’s no real data or stories to back up any success artists have had while using their service.
Unlike AWAL, who showcase artists they’ve supported, Amuse does note. They do however claim to offer strategic planning, playlist pitching, artist branding, digital marketing, radio plugging, and artist PR.
UPDATE – Amuse now has a page on their site featuring the artists on their label so you can see for yourself. Check them out and do your research.
Amuse Customer Support:
Customer support is pretty solid if you use their PRO subscription. 72 hours on their BOOST subscription is a little too long in my opinion.
Can Record Labels Use Amuse?
This is actually something we reached out to them about. Although during our discussion they said their service is for both artists, and record labels – While distributing music through their platform there’s always one primary artist that has to be set for each account. So from experience, I would (for now) look at other options if you are running a record label.
UPDATE – They’ve implemented an option to release under multiple artist profiles, so you should be good to go if you’re running a Record Label. This option is only available on their BOOST plan.
Final Thoughts On Amuse:
At launch, we were extremely sceptical – Because it was app only, and they only offered a free account. We didn’t see this lasting long term financially, nor giving them a reason to offer any support what-so-ever. Support is vital – I can’t stress it enough.
Since the update – Users can access through desktop/laptop, and with the added option of Pro, we’ve changed our thoughts on the company as a whole. The pricing is completely reasonable and it offers what the majority of artists require. The only thing they really need to update, is the amount of stores you can distribute your music to.
UPDATE – They’ve added a bunch of new stores, alongside offerin extended features with their BOOST plan for those who need it!
If you’re interested in alternatives that offer similar features/pricing then please check out LANDR, Ditto, iMusician and Spare Music. If you’re looking for a distribution company that is free to use, offers a bunch of stores/features but takes 15% of royalties then check out RouteNote!
