RouteNote is a distribution service that allows users to distribute their music to hundreds of stores such as iTunes, Spotify, TIDAL, and many more. It’s primary focus is getting your music into as many stores as possible while also offering services such as SoundCloud monetisation and YouTube Content ID. They’ve been in operation for many years and they are at the forefront when it comes to music distribution.
Who Can Use RouteNote?
Both artists and record labels can use RouteNote and it’s heavily used by both. While using RouteNote in the past, I also got a dedicated assistant that took care of most of the distribution process for me. They’re great at reaching out and offering continued support to established labels that are using their platform.
Is it Free or Paid?
RouteNote is completely free, however they do take 15% of royalties. They also allow users the option to pay a yearly fee: $10 (per track) to retain 100% of royalties. This is a great option if you have a marketing campaign for the first year as you want to generate as much revenue as possible. It adds options which I love as with some releases you may just want to distribute to stores if you’re unsure how well it will do. If you’re an established artist or record label, you have the option to pay a small fee (per release) to retain 100%.

What We Love About RouteNote:
- It’s free and you can cancel anytime. You’re not restricted to only using RouteNote.
- Good customer suppport. Nothing over the top but they respond within a timely manner if you have any issues whether it’s getting your music into stores or making any changes to a release.
- The added benefit of SoundCloud monetisation and YouTube content ID.
- Decent analytics. You can export in-depth spreadsheets so you know exactly where your royalties are coming from.
- They also offer split-pay so you can pay your collaborators or artists (if you are running a record label).
What We Don’t Like About RouteNote:
- Although they do have Split-Pay, it’s not as intuative as Repost Network – You have to fill out a form and RouteNote will manually add the splits to your release.
- Their website as a whole is rather slow which can be frustrating especially if you have a lot of releases and a lot of things to do. This can make distributing your music feel like a chore, rather than a celebration.
Important Things To Note:
RouteNote also allows you to create your own store and sell to fans directly – Giving you the chance to set your own price and allowing you to maintain full control of your music. This is great if you already have an established fan base and you don’t already have your own website that’s capable of selling digital downloads.
Does RouteNote Offer Music Promotion?
From our experience using the platform they do not offer any in-house promotion. They’re catered only towards distributing your music, and they do it well without any issues. As discussed before – You should never base your choice on if they offer promotion. If you’re wanting to distribute your music, you want to ensure that this is done the best way possible. Leave promotion as an after-thought as with all distribution services who offer promotion don’t usually follow through with it. It’s extremely rare to have a distributor successful promote your release unless they’re taking a large portion of your royalties or you’re an already established artists – In which case you won’t require many of the promotional resources they provide.

RouteNote is a great distribution company that doesn’t try to win musicians over with a bunch of additional features. They know what their company is about, and they stick to doing the basics properly, professionally and with care. They don’t go over-the-top with things you don’t necessarily need.
